Artist Bill Kidwell   Bill Kidwell

Bill Kidwell is a native Knoxvillian, born on July 27, 1934. At two years old he created his first art project, a crayon mural, on his grandmother's front door in Old Fountain City. An artist was born.

Bill says his first grade teacher encouraged his artwork, and, then, Central High School's art teacher helped him develop his talent further. After graduating high school, he joined the Marine Corps for three years, then entered the University of Tennessee in Knoxville to study art. UT Art Department Head at the time, Kermit Ewing, was one of his mentors.

In 1958 he took a break from his college education and began travelling, first to Miami, Florida, then to the Los Angeles area where he worked as a technical illustrator for Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank.

He left Los Angeles in 1964 and returned to UT to finish his art degree. In 1966 he traveled from Canada to Maine to New Orleans then moved back to California where he lived on a sailboat in Sausalito, then to Taos, New Mexico, where his artwork fully took flight.

The lure of home in East Tennessee inspired Bill to organize a studio on Fort Loudon Lake, and teach classes at UT. He continued his prolific production of paintings. Then, in 1972 he was artist for a National Geographic expedition to Yucatan, Mexico. He moved to 47 acres in Williamson County in Middle Tennessee in 1973. His artwork always has benefited from his travels and relocations.
Bill is most famous in this area for his extraordinary watercolors of historic Fountain City.
