Bill Lett
Jumping horses, leaping dancers, soaring eagles, and running buffalo are some of the sculptures that Bill makes by fabricating mostly copper and bronze. The metals are cut, twisted, hammered, and brazed together to form sculptures that are unique in style. None of the sculptures are cast and each piece of work is designed and individually made by Bill. He has been doing his artwork for about half a century. He started sketching and painting animals as a child and began creating sculpture in art and related classes at The University of Tennessee. Later Bill made objects and animals from scraps while serving in the U.S. Army in South Korea in the 1950s. He taught art in the Knoxville City School System for 30 years. Bill is a member of Southern Highlands Craft Guild and the Foothills Craft Guild, and was recently inducted into the Foothills Craft Guild Hall of Fame. He has won numerous awards in various shows throughout the south, including Best of Show in 1999 Foothills Craft Show in Knoxville and Best Metal in Show in Oak Ridge in 1992. Bill and his wife, Marie, grow and sell produce, with an emphasis on heirloom and unusual vegetables. This usually takes seven months of hard work. His other activities do not keep him from visualizing the next sculpture, which he sketches or memorizes for later use. The process of creating a new piece of sculpture seems to fulfill Bill's expressive endeavors. Finding someone who can appreciate and value his work is equally rewarding. Village Fine Art Gallery is grateful to showcase Bill's work in our gallery. |
