Artist, Clorinda Bell   Clorinda Bell (Cuzco School of Religious Art)

Clorinda Chavez Galdos was born in Cuzco, Peru, as the fifth of eight children. She studied at the Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco and earned the bachelor's degree in education for literature.

However, her passion is art in the style unique to Cusco. Pintura de la Escuela Cusquerna dates back to the 16th century colonial period in Peru, after the Spanish arrival. Some of the most important artists of the style are the founder, Italian Jesuit monk Bernardo Bitti; Diego Quispe Tito in the 17th century; and in the 19th century, Marcos Zapata who was a friend and teacher of artist Ignacio Chacon.

Chacon's painting of the Madonna and child was used for the U.S. Christmas postage stamp in 2006.

Clorinda is self-taught and has practiced and researched this style for more than 23 years. Her father was her first teacher, and all of her family paints. Clorinda arrived in the U.S. in 2006 and is now married to Aaron Bell. They live happily in Powell, Tennessee, with their new arrival, Benjamin Gabriel Bell.

Village Fine Art knew about the Cusco School of Peru and we were delighted when Clorinda came into the gallery with her work. She signs her paintings "BClory."
