Hazel Erikson
Hazel's love of photography began in 1997 after retiring from nursing at St.
Joseph's Hospital in Asheville, NC. Her love began with a flock of bluebirds
that frequented her backyard on Buffalo Mountain, along with a Mama bear and
her cubs, and also the wonders of the spectacular mountain vistas surrounding
her.
She took photography classes at AB Tech, the University of North Carolina,
Asheville, and at Tim Barnwell's Studio. Self-education has been an important
part of her path, too. Hazel shoots with a Canon Mark II 8.3 MP camera.
Hazel won a first place ribbon in 2006 in the National Wildlife Federation
photo contest and that photo hung in a photo display at the Smithsonian
Institute in Washington D.C. It also appeared in the
Smithsonian
magazine as well as
Nature's Best
magazine.
That same year she won two first place awards in the North Carolina wildlife
photo contest, and those photos appeared in their magazine and are hanging in
the natural history museum in Raleigh.
The 2005 Cradle of Forestry calendar cover displayed one of Hazel's sunrise
photos taken on the Blue Ridge Parkway. More recently one of her photos was
displayed on WLOS-TV. Her "house" photos have appeared on the cover of
Asheville's
Real Estate Weekly
magazine and her work has been honored with an Editor's Choice of the Week
selection from the National Association of Photoshop Professionals.
To date, Hazel has won 25 ribbons, among them several "Best of Show" awards.
