Mike Naney
Mike has used cameras from age 8, at first to record family gatherings, pets, and vacation memories. As an adult a camera has been his constant companion in the outdoors. He uses it to document geologic observations in the field, and to record natural beauty on weekend excursions and longer vacations. Mike is a trained geologist and that influences his choice of photographic subjects. In travels with his wife, Linda, they choose destinations where he can photograph interesting geologic features and other natural phenomena. A visit to Alaska provided opportunities to capture the northern lights, enjoy hot springs, and cross-country ski all during the same trip! Hawaii offered a hike to active lava flows and the chance to photograph molten lava cooling to form new rock. Mike says he takes great satisfaction in making images that capture the essence of a beautiful natural scene and that at the same time illustrate an earth-science related concept, principle or process. In 2005 Mike adopted digital photography. He says the instant feedback of the new medium gives him more freedom to experiment, to explore composition, exposure, range of focus, and motion. Digital printmakers have even more control than wet chemical photo printmakers to burn or dodge elements of a print, to hone the mood of images, and to convey a visual experience. |
