Tom Ellison
Tom was born in Arkansas, and his family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee when he was in elementary school. He later graduated from The University of Tennessee where he excelled in drawing and artistic skills. Art was not selected as a major, however, as he was not interested in abstract expressionism which was in vogue at that time. After thirty years devoted to a business career, Tom returned to painting for his own enjoyment. He was especially attracted to such artists as Manet, Renoir, Degas, VanGogh, Sargent, and others. The human figure (instead of landscapes) was more to his liking. He began copying paintings by these and other artists to learn their techniques and to have a painting that brought personal satisfaction. Fifty to one-hundred copies of various artists have been made over a period of 10 years. Tom did not sell the copies until friends and Village Fine Art Gallery convinced him that other people would enjoy them as much as he did. Of course, he signs his own name and pays tribute to the original artists who have brought us so many wonderful images. At this stage of his career and development as a serious artist, Tom does portraits, original creations of his own, copies of the impressionists by request, and occasional landscapes. |
